There are so many ways to get the Restoration Hardware look using paints, stains and waxes. This is just one way.
Today’s victim is our entertainment center in the living area of our house. I bought it like this. It was already painted white and distressed. It looked great with our Sherwin Williams Latte walls. But I’ve since painted the walls Alabaster white. So now the white piece was not working for me.
First i cleaned the piece with soap and water. Then I did a light first coat with a color like Dixie Belle Burlap. A medium tannish beige color. I dry brushed it on.
It was a very thin coat. You could see the white and distressing through it.
I let that coat dry. This type of paint dries very fast. I waited about 30 minutes then moved on to the second coat which was a color similar to Dixie Belle Mason Dixon Gray. Again I just dry brushed the entire piece. A very thin coat.
This is what it looked like after the Mason Dixon Gray color was applied. I am layering all of these colors by dry brushing in the same direction on each part of the piece.
I let that sit overnight and the next day I used a color like Dixie Belle Chocolate and a color like Dixie Belle Sandbar. This time I poured each color on a paper plate and using separate brushes for each color, I dry brushed alternating colors.
This was after dry brushing with Dixie Belle Chocolate and Dixie Belle Sandbar.. I went back over areas that looked a bit streaky to smooth them out.
After it was completely dry, I went over it with one coat of a product like Dixie Belle Gator Hide.
I am in love with this piece now. It looks brand new.
Do you have a piece of furniture that is not working for you anymore. Don’t be afraid to paint it. This paint requires no sanding or priming, unless it is a shiny laminate surface. Watch videos or take a workshop. It’s fun and very rewarding when you are finished.
I’m happy to answer any questions about how to achieve this look. You’re welcome to leave questions in the comment section below.
