Texas Road Trip, A Broken Toe
Every time we go to Round Top for Antiques week, it never fails we hear from some of the vendors, “Have you been to Canton yet”? “No”, we would tell them, “We have not”. “Well you should”, they tell us.
Kathy and I decide on going to the First Monday Trade Days, at the beginning of each month, which is actually the first weekend of every month. So we looked at the map and took off the first weekend in April. First off we had to stay in a hotel 30 miles away because we could not find a place near Canton. Most of the places to stay bump their prices up for these weekends. We stayed at the Best Western Hotel in Athens. Very nice place to stay and the ride to and from Canton was very pretty so it was not too bad.
The route in blue is the route we decided to take. So off we went.
So we get to Canton and on our way to our hotel in Athens we stop at a couple of places, Paul Michael’s (they have a huge one there) and LaurieAnna’s Vintage Home.
Ya’ll.. LaurieAnna’s store is the most beautiful store I have ever been too! It’s a must see if you go to Canton. It was the best part of the trip for Kathy and I. It gave us so much inspiration for our upcoming venture. Here are a few pics from her Facebook page. Go follow them for all kinds of beauty and inspiration. She carries clothing, jewelry and home decor.
Here are a couple of pics I took in Paul Michael’s. Love the door with the letters on it!
Love the Creation Station! We will need one like that at “The French Door”.
The following images are pics I snapped while shopping at the Trade Days. First day to shop it was cold and wet but we didn’t let that stop us. Thank goodness they have lots of shopping under roof.
Found this dresser and will be using it for a display.
Cute way to display reading glasses.
Loved this arrangement. So simple yet elegant.
What a great way to repurpose those old TV stands. This vendor turned it into a display.
Cute painted pieces.
One of my favorite vendors was this girl who builds and paints these beautiful frames with her husband. We are hoping to carry these at “The French Door” when we open this summer. For now if you are interested in these, I can place an order for you.
Cute garden gate I picked up.
Picked this beauty up for a customer looking for a coffee bar in her store.
Great occasional table.
Love this sign!
Cute hand made adirondack chair.
So the next day was a beautiful day and oh my gosh there were people every where. We had to take the suburban with the UHaul trailer back to pick things up and that was a trip in itself. So many people and they wouldn’t get out of the way. It was crazy. Everything was closing in on me and I could. not. breathe. Panic was setting in. I looked at Kathy and said let’s get out of here! Whew! I’m being a little dramatic but it was crazy. So we go back to the hotel and thought about what our game plan would be. Do we want to continue to fight this crowd and really there wasn’t a whole lot of used furniture which is what I was hunting for, or do we make a new plan. We looked at the map to see how long it would take us to Round Top. Oh only about 4 hours. We looked at each other and said let’s do it. I got on the phone and the computer that night calling and emailing contacts there for a place to stay. This was the tale end of Antique Week and everything was booked. But someone hooked us up with someone else and we found a place to stay.
Next day it was a beautiful day so off we went.
On the way we saw a dam. Sorry, had to share because Country come to Town, I had never seen a dam in all of my 52 years. It was beautiful!
We finally get to Round Top. Ahhh we could breathe. Everything is all spread out there, people are not on top of each other. There is so much more to see.
Here are just some pics that I snapped while we were there the first day.
So next day we get ready to hunt!
We buy a few things and go back to the Uhaul trailer to put some stuff in it. I put my foot on the trailer to brace myself as I try to get the door up and I’m having a hard time.
I get it up and I did not realize that a hutch we had purchased and not strapped yet was stuck on the door.
When I got the door up the hutch came down on my foot. OUCH! I was scared to take my shoe off, I thought my foot was cut in half. Thank God I had tennis shoes on. I really needed steel toe boots – note to self for next picking trip.
Sorry for the gross pic but here it is.
So I soaked it in Epson salts and iced it and had another day of shopping and limping. What?? Did you think this would stop me? Uh no. I would deal with that toe when I got home.
But after the whole day of walking on that foot we decided to head back to Louisiana.
So on the way back home we are on the interstate and a lady is blowing her horn at us and pointing to the back of the Uhaul.
I start freaking out. Anyone who knows me, knows I have panic attacks when traveling on the interstate. So I’m into deep breathing at the time and then, What????
I say, “Kathy that lady is blowing her horn and pointing at the trailer, we have to stop”.
So I’m thinking we are going to pull of the interstate somewhere.
We are coming up to a fork in the interstate, you know where you either go right to keep on the interstate or left to take the 610 loop in Houston???
Well Kathy goes right into the triangle between the two. “What? What?? What are you doing”????, I say (scream). She tells me we have to stop now. She says she’s going to check, “well I’m going with you”. “No you stay in the car”, “No I’m coming”. When I tell you it was the scariest moment of my life. Vehicles traveling at unGodly speeds flying by. Oh gosh, it was horrible. We get back there and the trailer door had come open. We had a padlock on it, so we thought. It must have not clicked shut all the way. By the grace of God, nothing had flown out. There was a strap hanging out. Kathy took the strap, closed the door and wrapped the door shut until we could get off the interstate to go get another lock.
Getting back on the interstate was rough too. But she did it! Sorry I don’t have pics of that escapade but if I did I know you would be laughing your head off. It’s funny now. But gosh that was a crazy moment.
This is what that lady looked like! Except she was blond and in a white car. I will never forget her face!
And this is what I looked like but I wasn’t driving!
But Thank you God, he took care of us. We got back on the interstate, stopped to buy a new lock and made it home safely!
Next day got the foot x-rayed. Just the toe was broken. So I guess I’ll have to slow it down for a little while…..
Who wants to come with us on our next road trip????
